Batavia, NY — Fresh off a solid 1:52.3 win at Harrah’s Philadelphia the week before Christmas, Ambushed shipped-in to Batavia Downs on Monday (Jan. 6) for her 2025 debut and scored a second consecutive win in the featured $13,000 Open Handicap pace for fillies and mares, the race that headlined the opening card of the winter meet at the Genesee County oval. 

Driver Joe Chindano Jr. got away last with Ambushed while Waitforever N (Brett Beckwith) took the lead from Oaxacan Dream N (Dave McNeight III) passing the :28.1 quarter, and then marched to the half in a middling :59 flat. Chindano then pulled Ambushed past that station and methodically made their way to the lead at the five-eighths pole. Moving up the backside, she crossed over to the pegs at three-quarters and then separated from the field in the final turn. Ambushed entered the stretch with a 1-½ length lead and rebuffed a late bid from Waitforever N to win by one in 1:57 flat. 

Ambushed ($6.70) is owned by D Racing Stable and Donald Mac Rae and trained by Hunter Oakes. 

Ambushed capped off a natural hat trick for Chindano in the sixth, seventh and eighth races, and was one of four victories he registered during the night. Those other three victors were Headline Maker (2:03, $50.00), Lydias Liberty (2:00.1, $12.20) and Shoreview (1:59.3, $10.40). 

A similarly impressive mile on Monday, given the biting cold temperatures and snowglobe atmosphere the races were held in, was turned in by Maggie Bell (Brett Beckwith) in the mid-level $9,500 pace for distaff participants. 

Maggie Bell sat second behind Hurrikane Msrodine (Kevin Cummings) until the quarter, where she pulled and took command at the top of the second turn. From there, Maggie Bell paced unfettered fractions of :58.3 and 1:27.4, and entered the stretch with a 1-½ length lead. From that point she scooted home on top by two in 1:57, matching the time of the feature race.

Owned by Del Pozzo Schwartz Paoleti and trained by Jaymes Mcassey, Maggie Bell returned $14.00 for the win. 

Maggie Bell was one of three wins for Beckwith during the proceedings. 

Other horsemen who had notable nights included driver Kevn Cummings and trainer Sam Smith, who teamed up to cross the line first with three of their starters and Shawn McDonough, who was responsible for two driving wins and with three training victories. 

Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Thursday (Jan. 9) at 3:00 p.m. and there will be a $430 carryover in the Jackpot Super Hi-5 pentafecta in the 15th race.

Batavia, NY — With holiday activities now completed and the new year officially rung in, Batavia Downs is ready for the return of live harness racing on Monday (Jan. 6) when the 2025 winter season kicks off the 85^th year of the historic Genesee County oval. The eight week, 15-day run will be held on a Monday-Thursday rotation with post time for all race days set for 3:00 p.m. The meet will run through Monday (Feb. 24).

Don Hoover, who is the Director of Live Racing at The Downs, is looking forward to the opening as the track is coming off another banner year.

“I’m very excited about the upcoming meet in view of the record numbers the track posted in 2024. After showing a 10.5% increase in our overall handle and realizing three one-day record handles in excess of $500,000 during our winter meet last year, I can only be optimistic about our product and ability to better those milestones this year. I can’t wait to welcome back our loyal customers,” said Hoover.

All the top local horsemen and women will be on hand once again, including last year’s leading driver, Drew Monti, who posted a total of 136 wins that earned his connections $949,765 in purses, and trainer Sam Smith, whose horses won a total of 90 races and bankrolled $658,622 as a result of those efforts.   

The local driver colony will have a new regular set of hands to contend with this year when Brett Beckwith makes Batavia his home twice a week for the next two months.

Beckwith raced sporadically at the Batavia winter meet last year and finished a close third for dash wins. This year as a regular, he will definitely be vying for the top spot on the leader board.

Beckwith is coming off a career year in 2024 that saw him take driving titles at both Saratoga Raceway and Plainridge Park. His combined 608 wins last year placed him third among all drivers in North America behind only Aaron Merriman and Jason Bartlett, and those wins helped his horses earn $6,271,414 in purses, while Beckwith himself earned a personal best UDR of .334. In December, Beckwith was named the United States Harness Writers Association’s Dan Patch Rising Star for 2024, an award he will receive in Orlando in February.

“I like to keep busy and I get a lot of work at Batavia. The track itself is great since they redid it and they keep it in great shape. The driving colony there is very competitive and will keep you on your toes. But I get a lot of live drives from the trainers who use me and that makes for some exciting racing. I’m looking forward to getting back to western New York,” said Beckwith.  

Beckwith looks to get off to a fast start and has 10 rides on the 15 race card Monday to help facilitate that.

The betting menu for each 15-race card features six Doubles, 15 Exactas, 15 Trifectas, 14 Superfectas, two Pick-3’s, three Pick-4’s, one Pick-5 and one Jackpot Super High Five in the final race each day.

There are two promotions available for the track’s in-house customers on all live race days that add value to their wagers by providing free play on the gaming floor. The Early Bird Daily Double gives $10 back in free play when a minimum $10 is bet on the early daily double between 1:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. and the Match Play Free Play Frenzy returns $25 in free play to anyone betting $25 at the same time on the same live Batavia Downs race. Batavia, NY — After getting some class and post relief from her last two starts, Won Surreal Deal impressively toured the facility at Batavia Downs on Wednesday (Oct. 30) evening en route to her sixth win of the year in the $12,000 upper-level conditioned pace for fillies and mares. 

Kyle Cummings and Won Surreal Deal grabbed the initial lead from their pylon-position start before Louie The Lilac (Kevin Cummings) overtook them at the eighth pole. But Won Surreal Deal didn’t want the trip and re-took control before the :28.1 quarter. From there, Won Surreal Deal got to the half in a measured :57.1 half where Hes Express (Drew Monti) pulled first-over to challenge as they made their way onto the second circuit. 

Hes Express drew alongside Louie The Lilac, but second was as far as he got as Won Surreal Deal continued to chug along on the engine and started to separate at three-quarters as Louie The Lilac tried to keep pace, which she did. But she could not make up any ground on Won Surreal Deal as the cruising leader won in-hand by 1-¾ lengths in 1:54 flat. 

Won Surreal Deal ($3.50) is owned by Parsimonious Racing Stable and trained by Jeff Sorenson. 

Later in the $9,500 conditioned event for fillies and mares, Oaxaca Dream N (Dave McNeight III) took the lead at the quarter from Shooting Brooke (Joe Chindano Jr.), who then sat the trip behind the leader through quarters of :28.4, :58.2 and 1:27.1. At the top of the stretch, Shooting Brooke pulled the pocket and blasted down the lane, gaining on Oaxacan Dream N with every stride. The race went down to the wire where Oaxacan Dream N hung on by a neck and won in 1:55.4. 

It was the ninth win of the year for the heavily-backed Oaxacan Dream N ($2.90) who is owned by Vogel and Wags Nags and trained by Maria Rice. 

In the fourth race, 10-year-old Prairie Panther (Drew Monti) finished first in 1:56 and chalked up his 75th career victory for owners Joel Warner and Mike Deters, who also trains the habitual winner. 

Brett Beckwith was visiting from The Spa and left as the leading driver on Wednesday after he won three races during the night. Two of those winners were conditioned by Chris Petrelli, who tied Maria Rice for top trainer honors with a double. 

Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Friday (Nov. 1) with post time at 6:00 p.m. and there will be a carryover of $1,621 in the Jackpot Super Hi-5 pentafecta in the 13th race.

Batavia, NY — Driver Joe Chindano Jr. put on a driving clinic at Batavia Downs on Wednesday (Sept. 11) night by winning six races on the card. 

Chindano scored with NY Hardcore (1:56.3, $5.50), Tidal Shark (1:55.4, $3.60), Pepin Coolie (2:01.2, $4.70), LA Always A Martini (1:56.2, $5.00), Pop The Bubbly (1:56.1, $3.60) and Beddenburg (1:56.3, $4.70). He also had a second and third out of his 13 drives. 

The one race Chindano didn’t win was the $13,500 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap pace. That went to Oaxacan Dream N, who returned to Batavia after a successful month-long hiatus at Tioga Downs. 

Dave McNeight III rushed Oaxacan Dream N off the gate and took a lead she would not relinquish. After getting to the half unchallenged in :58.1 with only Ball Diamond (Ray Fisher Jr.) tracking close from the pocket, Center Attraction (Jim McNeight Jr.) pulled first-over, but stalled shortly after making the move. That left It’s Corona Time (Joe Chindano Jr.) who followed Center Attraction to tip three-wide and draw alongside Oaxacan Dream N at three-quarters. The two mares paced in close proximity, but Oaxacan Dream N held the advantage from the top of the stretch to the line where she won by a half length in 1:55. 

It was the eighth win of the year for Oaxacan Dream N ($5.30) who is owned by Vogel and Wags Nags and trained by Maria Rice.

Another terrific trio on Wednesday was driver Kevin Cummings, trainer Sam Smith and owner Mike Torcello, who combined for a hat trick. They won with Stay Safe (1:57.3, $2.50), Pray The Rosary (1:58.3, $4.20) and Louie The Lilac (1:56.1, $11.40).

Batavia, NY — Dave McNeight III, aka “Triple Sticks”, doubled his nickname on Tuesday (Aug. 13) night after he struck six wins on his opponents at Batavia Downs. McNeight won with Italia Seelster (1:57.2, $4.00), Arco N (1:56.3, $3.50), Molly Kool (1:56.2, $12.40), Arnold (2:00.2, $17.20), Alexander Hanover (2:01, $10.20) and Bettor B Sawyer (1:57.3, $10.20). And from the 12 races he drove in, McNeight also finished second three times and third once, giving himself a stellar .667 UDR for the evening. 

McNeight started the night in sixth place for wins among all drivers at the Downs for the current meet and jumped past Joe Chindano Jr. (9) and Drew Monti (10) into fourth with his current count (12) and now sits right behind Jim McNeight Jr. (13). The top two drivers are Jim Morrill Jr. (19) and Kevin Cummings (14). 

The one race McNeight didn’t win was the $13,500 Open Handicap pace for fillies and mares that went to Tioga Downs based Won Surreal Deal (Kyle Cummings) who made her second start at Batavia Downs a winning one as she wreaked havoc on her opponents. 

Won Surreal Deal took the lead off the gate before momentarily yielding to Summer Lovin (Kevin Cummings) at the :28 quarter. But as soon as that one cleared, Won Surreal Deal was out again and charged back to the front, where she would remain for the rest of the mile. Won Surreal Deal kept the pace honest to the half in :56.4 but then turned on the heat up the backstretch, where she pulled away to a three length lead as she passed three-quarters in 1:25 flat. Around the last turn, Won Surreal Deal kept tightening the screws and entered the lane on top by 4-½ lengths. As she made her way down the stretch, Won Surreal Deal swelled up and torched the field by seven wrapped-up lengths and tripped the light in 1:53.4.

It was the third win of the year for Won Surreal Deal ($5.50) who is owned by Parsimonious Stable and trained by Jeff Sorenson.

Howlenthehills (American Ideal-Arielle Lynn) has been on a tear this year, winning seven out of his eight starts with one second as well. That lone defeat came by only one-half length in the $225,000 MGM Messenger Stake final at Yonkers Raceway last month to his stablemate, Sweet Beach Life. Other than that, he’s been a wrecking ball since April over every track surface he’s been on. He is undefeated in NYSS action this year, took a 1:50.1 lifetime mark at Vernon Downs in June and his overall efforts currently place him as the fourth richest 3-year-old male pacer in North America to date.

Boston Rocks (Boston Red Rocks-Scirocco Sarah) has started four times in NYSS action this year, winning twice and finishing second twice, with those two losses coming to Howlenthehills. His lifetime mark came in an overnight at Mohegan Sun Pocono when he paced around their red surface in 1:51.4 while pulling away by 7-1/2 lengths. He rolled that win into another devastating performance in his last start at Monticello Raceway, where he won his split of the NYSS in 1:52.3 by nine lengths in a laugher.

These two pacers have a lot in common.

Howlenthehills is the top point-getter (150) and highest earner ($101,600) in his NYSS classification while Boston Rocks is tied with him for points (150) while sitting second right behind him for earnings ($94,650)

But they also have a couple outstanding differences.

Howlenthehills was winless as a 2-year-old, including seven starts in the NYSS, and only earned $36,381. While in his first year of racing, Boston Rocks won four races, including three NYSS legs and the $225,000 final before making an appearance in the Breeders Crown final. All of which earned him $352,922.

The other major difference is Howlenthehills is a gelding while Boston Rocks is a colt. So there are two track records in jeopardy on Wednesday as a result of this match-up.

The Batavia Downs standard for a 3-year-old pacing gelding is 1:51.2 while for a 3-year-old pacing colt is 1:52.2, so this is something that bears watching.

Howlenthehills has drawn post one for trainer Travis Alexander and will tour the facility with Matt Kakaley once again in tow while Boston Rocks has post two, with his regular reinsman Jason Bartlett in the bike for trainer Mike Deters.

In the second division, Alexander will also be starting Huntingforchrome (Huntsville-All On Top Hanover) who is another horse who could stake a claim at a new track record as he comes into this start with a lot of asterisks, but also a lot of speed.

Huntingforchrome started out the year with two NYSS starts that yielded one second place finish for then trainer Jenn Bongiorno. Two weeks after that, the gelding found himself in Travis Alexander’s barn and has been a speed show on the Grand Circuit ever since. 

His first start for Alexander was in the Meadowlands Pace elimination where he was race timed in 1:49.3, but he was rigged incorrectly according to Alexander in an interview after the race. With the proper changes made, Huntingforchrome then won a 3-year-old Open pace at the Meadowlands in a sparkling lifetime best 1:48.1, finished second in 1:49.1 by 1-3/4 lengths in the Adios elimination at the Meadows and then finished fourth in the Adios final by only 2-1/2 lengths while being race timed in 1:49.4. That start was only four days removed from this NYSS outing at Batavia, which is his first NYSS tilt since mid-June.

Alexander has Matt Kakaley in the bike behind Huntingforchrome and they will start from post five in this event.

His main competition appears to be Ameritric (American Ideal-Electric Fool) who is the only starter in this field with a NYSS victory this year, coming in a lifetime best 1:52.3 outing at Buffalo. Other than that, Ameritric has won three overnights and has posted the highest earnings of this group this year ($68,750).

Brett Beckwith will take the reins for trainer George Ducharme from post three.

Taranaki (Huntsville-Free Fi Girl) is as consistent as a horse can be, finishing seven out of nine starts in the money with four straight checks in the NYSS. He has gate speed and having drawn post one, will be in the mix from start to finish.

Trainer Paul Jessop has called upon local leading driver Kevin Cummings to steer this week.

The New York Sire Stake divisions will go as race seven and nine while the three $20,000 Excelsior races are carded as three, five and 11. Post time for race one is at 6 p.m.

Batavia, NY — The Western New York Trackmaster Series finals and consolation races for pacers will be held at Batavia Downs on Monday afternoon (Feb. 19) and $93,000 in total purses will be in play for the participating horses.

The series is broken into three groups: TM 79, TM75 and TM71 and seeding for the finals and consolations were determined by money-earnings from the four preliminary legs.

The TM79 final goes for $20,000 and two undefeated starters will be facing off.

Long Train Runnin (Billy Davis Jr.) comes in on a four race winning streak, all of which came in the TM preliminaries. Proven Desire (John Cummings Jr.) has strung three victories together in this series despite a scratch three weeks ago due to injury. Both horses are from the Jim Clouser Jr. Barn and will go as an entry.

Another high performing duo starting in the final as a Sam Smith stable entry is Dogfight (Jim Morrill Jr.) and Mcdelicacy (Kevin Cummings). Dogfight has two wins and a second in three TM starts while Mcdelicacy has finished second four consecutive times, three of which were to Long Train Runnin. This should be a very competitive event.

There are also two TM79 consolations, one for $10,500 and one for $9,500.

In the $10,500 split, Silverhill Blaze (Jim Morrill Jr.) has been chasing Long Train Runnin and Proven Desire over the last three weeks, finishing second twice and third another time. But he won’t be facing either of them on Monday and looks to make his own mark. In the $9,500 group there is a formidable stable entry of Doyoukissfirstdate (Dave McNeight III) and Star Messenger (Kevin Cummings) from Davis Russo and Marc Shuttleworth’s Clayton’s Bettor N (Jim Morrill Jr.) who put in a huge mile last week before just getting beat at the line.

The $17,000 TM75 final features two more entries.

Sam Smith is starting Authentic Hanover (Drew Monti) and Stonebridge Hypnos (Jim Morrill Jr.), who registered three wins and a second in his four series outings. Shawn McDonough will be starting Thatmomentinlife (Billy Davis Jr.) and Weekend Atnannies (Kevin Cummings), who also has three wins in four series starts while finishing third in the fourth.

The $8,500 consolation for that class features a very wide open betting race as seven of the eight starters have not won a race this year. And the only horse that has notched one victory — which came in this series — is Jerry Nugent Jr.’s Dry Ridge Ace (Keith Kash Jr.) who is listed at 25-1 morning line.

Lastly, the TM71 $14,000 final has another dynamic duo from the Sam Smith stable who will line up as an entry as well.

Road Map (Jim Morrill Jr.) who has won three out of four series starts while being narrowly beaten in the fourth and Howmacs Hank (Billy Davis Jr.) who comes in on a two race win streak. But there will be strong opposition from Greg Johnson’s Misplaced Rock (Kyle Swift) and Chris Petrelli’s Artistic Spirit (Drew Monti), who are both two-time winners in the series and are currently at the top of their game.

The TM71 consolations have Shawn McDonough stable entries favored in both events. In the $7,500 leg, Surfers Paradise (Jim Morrill Jr.) and Traffic Citation (Billy Davis Jr.) lead the way while Bettor Country (Billy Davis Jr.) and Sapphire Love Chip (Jim Morrill Jr.) got the oddsmaker’s nod in the $6,500 split.

There are also a pair of carryovers associated with Monday’s card to make the wagering even more interesting.

The 50-cent Pick-5 that starts in race one and runs through race five has a $891 carryover while the 20-cent Jackpot Super Hi-5 in race 13 features a $2,669 carryover.

Post time for the first race on Monday is 3 p.m.

The WNY Trackmaster trotting finals will be held on Thursday (Feb. 22).

Batavia, NY — The nearly week long winter storm that has gripped western New York and necessitated the cancellation of live racing at Batavia Downs on Monday (Jan. 15), has once again forced track officials to cancel live racing at The Downs for Thursday (Jan. 18) due to the ongoing effects of the extreme weather conditions. Simulcast at the track will remain open.

Live racing will resume as scheduled at Batavia on Monday (Jan. 22) at 3 p.m.

Batavia, NY — A pair of $14,000 Open I Handicap races were up for grabs on Saturday night (Nov. 26) at Batavia Downs and Jim Morrill Jr. was more than happy to take the top prize in each after he air mailed both of his mounts to impressive victories.

In the trotting feature, Morrill launched Credit List from post eight and battled on the outside with Jumpinthejailhouse (Kevin Cummings) to the quarter in :28.3 before crossing over to the pylons at the three-eighths pole. Morrill then slowed the tempo to three-quarters forcing Captain Krupnik (Drew Monti) to come first over from third and get to within a length of the leader heading into the last turn. Credit List and Captain Krupnik broke away from the field and faced off heading for home. Captain Krupnik closed with every stride but couldn’t get to Credit List, who hung on to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:58.4.

It was the third straight win for Credit List ($8.00) and eighth of the year, pushing his earnings to $80,471 in 2022 for Room4040 LLC Stable and trainer Kevin Reynolds Jr.

Then in the next race, Morrill shooed home Prairie Panther in the top pacing event after being parked out every step of the mile. Prairie Panther made his way to second on the outside of Brave World (Denny Bucceri) at the :28 quarter but Brave World would not let Prairie Panther take the front. The two 8-year-old geldings then went toe-to-toe to the half in :57 and three-quarters in 1:25.3 before heading into the last turn, still in the heat of battle.

Stranger Things (Kevin Cummings) was now on Prairie Panther’s back and he was poised to pounce in the lane. When they hit the top of the stretch, Prairie Panther put away Brave World but Stranger Things was now outside of him and coming hard. But somehow, some way, Prairie Panther dug deep and had something left in the tank to hold off Stranger Things at the line to win by a neck in 1:55.3.

It was the 15th win of the year and 62nd of his career for Prairie Panther ($2.50) who is owned by his trainer Michael Deters, in partnership with Joel Warner.

Morrill ended the night with three wins.

Driver Drew Monti had a huge night at Batavia on Saturday, winning five races during the card including scoring a natural hat trick in races 11, 12 and 13. He won with Make Some Waves (1:56, $7.40), A Game Changer (1:56.2, $22.40), Johnny Chip (1:56.2, $23.80), Ey Cowboy (1:57.1, $5.00) and Windemere Ryan (1:57.4, $4.10). He also had two seconds and two thirds that when combined, gave him a .521 UDR for the evening. Three of Monti’s five wins (Make Some Waves, Ey Cowboy and Windemere Ryan) were trained by Joe Skowyra.

Two other horsemen who teamed up for a natural hat trick were driver Kevin Cummings and trainer Sammy Smith who combined to win the third, fourth and fifth races with Speed It (1:59, $6.10), Gemini Eddie (2:00.1, $19.40) and The Longest Yard (1:54.3, $2.40).

Batavia, NY — Batavia Downs Gaming and Hotel will be the site of the annual Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester fundraiser in the clubhouse at the track on Friday (Sept. 16). The event runs from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with post time for the first race set at 6 p.m.

There is a $30 donation to enter the event but friends of the track and BCCR who attend will get a delicious full buffet, a live racing program and $25 in Free Play for the gaming floor. They will also be able to take part in the silent auction that offers a plethora of items to be won including Michael Buble tickets, Trans Siberian Orchestra tickets, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres tickets and signed memorabilia, two “Stay and Play” getaways to the Batavia Downs Hotel and many more items to numerous to list. The silent auction starts at 5 p.m. and runs until the last race.

The track has also secured 18 major sponsors locally from within and outside of the racing industry who have already made generous donations to this BCCR event. And again this year, the local horseman will be heavily involved as many owners, trainers, drivers and grooms have pledged a percentage of their earnings from Friday to the BCCR. All these people will be recognized throughout the night as the event unfolds.

Earlier this week in preparation for Friday, Scott Kiedrowski, Vice-President of Operations Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel said “We are looking forward to having the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester once again hold their annual fundraiser here at Batavia Downs. The support we receive from our guests and employees for this very worthwhile event shows the caring nature of our community.”

After last year’s event, Holly Anderson, Executive Director and CEO of the BCCR commented “We feel the support from the Batavia Downs community all year long. They entrust their friends and family members to us, assist us in making important connections within their community, and stay in touch with us on an ongoing basis. Breast cancer takes much more than “awareness”. It needs ACTION. Our friends at Batavia Downs walk the talk.”

The 2021 Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester event at Batavia Downs raised a record $19,653 in donations. The track’s management, staff and horsemen have all worked very hard to try and beat that number this year.
